MEN ? S A GRADE
Mata put on four goals against ’Karamea in the A grade competition last Saturday. The match was played at Maungakaramea. Apparently Mata found the grounds very much to their liking. E. Blake and M. Price were both in scoring positions and netted for Mata, while the redoubtable Wynston Johns was in fine form and added two to Mata’s account. Maungakaramea was definitely outclassed. Messrs P. Whittle and A. Babe controlled the game. UNITED A EXTENDS MANGAPAI. Mangapai' were extended at Kensington Park on Saturday to defeat by two goals to nil the A team of the United Club. It was a hard fought game full of thrills. The speed was on from the start, Mangapai commanding territorial advantage in the opening stages of the game.
Both teams lost good opportunities, United missing four shots at an open goal. Mangapai drew first blood in the second half from a penalty bully in which Jim Carter outmanoeuvred Fyfo. Two long corners in succession brought Mangapai no further advantage.
Territorial advantages were shared for a time, then Mangapai’s second goal came when J. Carter put the ball into the net after a melee in United’s goal mouth. Both teams continued to keep the pressure high until the final whistle but no further goals were scored. Messrs Campbell and Primmer refereed. SPRINGFIELD PLAYS FAST HOCKEY AT KENSINGTON. Playing on the Park grounds for the first time this season Springfield found the going fast.’ Quite evidently it suited their style and they ran up six goals in the course of the game and left Kara opportunithy lo score a total of only two. In the first half Kara had the territorial advantage. There was a thrill for the sideline when L. Whisker, in netting for Springfield charged into the net .and upended it. Before the half-time whistle blew A. Palmer scored a second goal for Springfield and M. Shpeherd put one to Kara’s account. With the commencement of the second spell Springfield put its best foot forward to dominate play and send its score rocketing. Kara penetrated the enemy circle several times and lost many good opportunities. The pace was on all the time. The game was inclined to be marred by too much obstruction. For Springfield A. Palmer (2), T. Graham (2), J. Palmer and L. Whisker were scorers; Kara’s two being contributed by M. Shepherd and H. Timperley. Messrs Oldcorn and Woolf or d refereed.
