Amsterdam's. Night of Terror

(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. After some street fighting, the authorities seemed to have the situation under control, says an Amsterdam message. All important buildings are now * heavily guarded and everyone seeking to enter is covered with a revolver until they establish their identities. Hundreds of suspected members of the “Fifth Column” were arrested. The police shot a man who was signalling to enemy planes. Savage Bombing. Amsterdam experienced a terrifying night, ending with a savage bombing attack directed against the city's airport and surrounding buildings. A terrific explosion in the southeastern district proved to have been caused by the explosion of a German aeroplane which had been shot down. A second raid was apparently more severe, although a bomb hit the famous Amstel railway station during the first raid, in which there were several civilian casualties. Tfte correspondent of the British United Press, who was within a few yards of the bombed areas, saw four people lying on the pavement when the smoke cleared. All were terribly injured. A water main and sewers were smashed and windows were shattered over a wide area. Twenty persons are reported to have been killed in Central Amsterdam as a result of the second raid. Bombs hit houses 300 yards from the post office. Brussels, Liege Bombed. Enemy raiders bombed Brussels and Liege. Belgian raid casualties before noon on Saturday had .already surpassed Friday’s total. German activity over Belgium diminished at 1 a.m. yesterday but was renewed at dawn. It was learned in London on . Saturday that the German bombing of Brussels was indiscriminate. The latest casualty list includes 92 killed and 61 injured in Brussels and suburbs. It is learned authoritatively in London. says a British Official Wireless message, that German claims to have occupied five Belgian aerodromes are without foundation whatever.
