Satirical “The Women” At Plaza Theatre
Based on the stage play of the same name, “The Women,” perhaps even more effective on the screen, opened a season of. two nights at the Plaza Theatre on Saturday evening. This satirical indictment of the “weaker” sex is as shocking to the womenfolk as it is amusing to their husbands, but there is no denying the truthfulness that is an essential basis of such a story. Mrs. Stephen Haines, the loving, happy wife, is portrayed by Norma Shearer, and Rosalind Russell is the jealous, gossiping Mrs. Howard Fowler who brings trouble to a peaceful home. Providing the gossip is Joan Crawford. as the mercenary Crystal Allen, who paves the way to Reno for other women. These players head a particularly strong supporting cast which gives a brilliant portrayal of the types of women who go to make a world. Lavishly produced, the film provides most interesting entertainment for men, who are notably absent from the cast, as well as women.
