Road Improvements At Maungatapere
Improvements near the Maungatapere school were authorised by the Whangarei County Council at its monthly meeting yesterday. The engineer (Mr J. Norris) stated that the main highway between the school and the dairy factory corner was on bad alignment and grading and reconstruction was due. The Public Works Department had surveyed and investigated the junction and alternatives were still being considered, one being a deviation to the north of the factory. He recommended five-chain radius curves branching both ways, as such construction would cover any fobtpathing on the south of the present alignment. He also recommended a path along the north road fence from the factory corner to that opposite the school gate, pointing out that this , would avoid road reconstruction works and give footpath facilities to existing cottages. Safe Crossing-. Although this would bring the children to a road crossing right on the corner opposite the school gate, which could not be considered an entirely safe crossing, he considered it provided the safest crossing that could be reasonably given. An eight-foot wide footpath, metalled three inches thick, would cost approximately £25. Children arriving from the south might require rough path provision on the south road boundary and a further £ls would be involved. Cr. R. Feaver said he would not like to do the work until he knew what the Public Works Department intended regarding the probable deviation. He did not think provision of a footpath on the south side was necessary. The council adopted the other recommendation made by the engineer. NO MORE PILES !
