Protest Against Railway Dismissals
[Per Press Association. Copyright.] DUNEDIN, This Day. Twenty-two employees of the Hillside railway workshops have received notice of the termination of their employment as from Friday. The position was discussed at a mass meeting yesterday afternoon, • when an emphatic protest was made against the dismissals and the placing of such men on No. 13 Scheme. “We also ask the Government,” the resolution stated, “to honour the pledge made to the workers of New Zealand at the 1938 election that a vote for Labour was a vote for economic security.” It was stated in official quarters in Wellington last night that as work fluctuated it was necessary to take men on and put them off. The Railway Department was in touch with other State departments, particularly the Labour Department, with a view to continuity of employment for the men concerned.
