Empire Correspondents Resent British Gag
(Received 11 a.m.) LONDON. May 3. The Association of Overseas Empire Correspondents sent a letter to the Prime Minister (Mr. Chamberlain) and other Ministers, and to High Commissioners, strongly protesting against the Service Department’s censorship activities. The association expressed deep resentment at the order that all comments or speculation on military operations in Norway or even political criticism of the Government relative to the general handling of the Norwegian campaign, should not pass to the cable offices without reference to the Ministry of Information. Correspondents Walk Out. All the English and American war correspondents at the R.A.F. headquarters in France have walked out and come to London to protest against the proposed new method for the release of news from the R.A.F. on the Western Front, under which the Air Ministry officials compile all bulletins, and forbid correspondents to visit aerodromes, interview pilots, or send eyewitness’ despatches. The correspondents complained that the system would destroy the effectiveness and objectivity of the coverage of the war.
