Respected Maori’s Death Mrs Piripi Whui, a well-known identity among the Northern Maoris, died on Wednesday at Tautoro. At the hui, which took place at Tautoro, a large gathering of Maoris from all over the North congregated. Mrs Whui was 84 and leaves a large famiiy. * * * * Much-Travelled Letter. A letter which was posted in Whangarei last lylonday was returned by the mail delivered here yesterday morning, having in less than five days travelled to Sydney and back—a distance of 2500 miles. It bears the first day cover of the transtasman New Zealand-England via Sydney air service, postage being a 5d New Zealand and 5d Australian stamp. * * * 9 Minor Comedy. A dropped coin, a stamped foot and a standing bus provided all the ingredients for a minor comedy in Lower Bank Street this morning. The coin was dropped by a man who stamped down a foot in an endeavour to prevent the coin from rolling. Instead his foot sent it shooting into the roadway underneath a stationary bus. With woebegone expression he stood beside the bus with a few interested onlookers. When the bus withdrew the roadway did not yield up its treasure until somebody found the truant coin on the opposite side of the street. It was a penny! ♦ * *► * Fierce Dog Wanted. The Whangarei branch of the S.P.C.A. frequently receives requests; from those desiring to dispose of or' adopt pets. Those requiring to find, new homes for their pet animals make; a point of emphasising docility, while ! this characteristic is sought after in-, variably by those seeking pets. Con-' sequently an application made to the! society recently caused something of a, sensation. It was for the largest, most; savage-natured dog procurable. Bishop of Nelson. The nomination of a successor to the Rt. Rev. W. G. Hilliard as Bishop of Nelson was made unanimously at a special session of the Diocesan Synod at Nelson this week. Bishop Hilliard is to return to Australia as rector of St. John’s Church, Parramatta, and assistant bishop in the diocese of Sydney. The name of the new bishop for Nelson will be announced next week. % fc * * War Correspondents. A motion passed by the Returned Soldiers’ Association conference recommended that any fui'ther war correspondents appointed should be returned soldiers with suitable journalistic experience. It was stated that there were many returned soldiers on newspapers Competent to do the work, both as journalists and because they knew service conditions. % * * ♦ Testing Work Progresses Overcoming extraordinary circumstances in a late spring and the outbreak of war, the Northland' Herd Improvement Association is completing a season which has been markedly successful. Over 800 members have been testing their herds and plans are being made to extend the scope next year. Already a number of existing members and those who intend testing for the first time, have been received.
