N.Z. Rugby And War Effort
“An excellent conference,” said Mr L. J. Brake, past president of the North Auckland Rugby Union, who returned yesterday from attending the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union. Together with the president (Mr Jack Finlayson), Mr Brake represented North Auckland.
Main objective of the conference had been to co-operate with the Government in every way possible in the furtherance of the war effort. No Ambitious Tours. Although no specific action was taken, delegates generally agreed that representative matches should be confined to weekends and that no ambitious tours should be attempted. Not only was the aspect of recruiting, considered in relation to big football, but it was also deemed undesirable for players to apply for leave at a time when maximum production is so vital. In pursuance of this policy, the North Auckland Union did not seek touring fixtures, but away games with Auckland (an annual fixture) and Thames Valley were arranged.
