Man Kills Wife, Detective, Himself
(■Received 1.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 25. UPWARD OF 50 POLICEMEN HAD A SENSATIONAL ENCOUNTER WITH A MURDERER AT WOLLONGONG TODAY, CULMINATING IN THE LOSS OF THREE LIVES. The victims were : George Hinsby, 50, a crane driver, of the Port Ivembla Steel Works. Ilis wife, Amelia Hinsby, 45. Detective John Edward Dunn, 00. who was only recently married.
Ordered Out. The police ascertained that Hinsby had a dispute with his wife and shot her with a rifle. His son and daughter, aged 17 and 11 respectively, were ordered out by Hinsby, who fired a shot after the son, which missed. A neighbour was summoned, and he also was ordered away, but called the police, several of whom arrived, including Detective Dunn. Hinsby refused to allow the police into the house and pointed the rifle at thefn, causing them to withdraw. The police then surrounded the house, and kept a large crowd at a safe distance. • They requisitioned some tear gas arid called for extra police from Sydney.
Fired Into House. The latter arrived two hours later. The police then began firing rifles and revolvers into the house, calling upon Hinsby to surrender. Suddenly Detective Dunn fell dead on the footpath, shot through the forehead. His body was quickly removed from view. Eventually two policemen crept to the side of the house. and peered through a window. . They saw Hinsby lying dead on a bed with the rifle in his hand. , Apparently he had committed suicide after a three hours’ siege. His wife’s body wbs fouM bn the kitchen floor.
