Mr. Thomas Maugham

OBITUARY

The death took place at Victoria Valley last week of Mr Thomas Maugham, aged 80. Born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, on May 16, 1859, the late Mr Maugham accompanied his parents to New Zealand in the sailing ship Cashmere in 1862. After a few years' residence in Auckland they shifted to Mangonui, where the father became proprietor of the “Old Oak” Hotel. Following the death of Mr Maugham, the family returned to Boston. After the son had completed his education, they again sailed for New Zealand, settling in Auckland, where the late Mr Thomas Maugham was married. With his wife he left there for Victoria Valley where he took up land and remained till the time of his death. Member of County Council. lie had been .a member of the county council and a director of the Kaitaia Dairy Company. In his early days he had a reputation as a boxer and was also a keen cricketer. He was one of those who had the honour of receiving the King George VI. Coronation medal. He leaves a wife and family of five —Mrs A. A. Gardiner/(Kaitaia), Mrs R. Coulter (Fairburn), Mrs Morgan (Auckland), Mrs Reid (Whangarei), and Mr T. W. Maugham (Victoria Valley). Two brothers also survive him—Mr Frank Maugham (Peria) .and Mr E. Maugham (Maungatapere). There are a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren..
