First-Aid Provision At Sawmill Enforced
The duty of sawmillers in keeping first-aid requisites on their premises was emphasised by Mr Ferner, S.M., in the Kaikohe Court, when imposing a penalty of £3 on John jMcCallum, sawmiller,. of Tautoro. McCallum was charged with a breach of the Sawmillers’ Award in failing to keep a stretcher at his mill. He pleaded guilty. Evidence was given by the Inspector of Awards (Mr,G. Adler) that there was no stretcher at the mill, despite McCallum having been warned previously. He stressed the necessity of such facilities being, provided at sawmills. The magistrate agreed that it was essential for first-aid equipment to be kept on the premises. It should be available at all times. The risk of accident at sawmills was notorious and he was going to assist the department in enforcing the award relating to these provisions. Imposing a penalty of £3, the magistrate said that if further cases were brought he would, consider increasing the penalty to a higher figure.
