Cat Afraid For Nine Lives
AUCKLAND, This Day. There was only one member of the company of the Achilles whose morale failed during the great battle off the River Plate. This was the ship’s official mascot, a cat born at sea before the engagement. It had never been on “leave” when the fight took place and the crashing of the guns and the shuddering of the ship completely unnerved it. Shivering with fright it took refuge in one of the officers’ cabins, and for several days it was, as an officer described it “frightfully shattered.”
