Huge four-engined Sunderland flying-boats are mostly used by R.A.F. Coastal Command, and these go out to meet merchant ships approaching shores of Britain. Flying-boats are strongly armed and gunners maintain a ceaseless watch. Merchant ships are also taught to help themselves, and for this purpose many vessels are equipped with paravanes (below), which are used to catch mines.
