No Swedes Sunk In Allied Convoys
(Received 2 p.m.) STOCKHOLM, February 21. “To our knowledge no Swedish ship has been sunk while in a British or French convoy,” said the Swedish Foreign Minister, M. Gunther, in Parliament. “Sweden has lost 32 cargo vessels, aggregating 64,000 tons, during the war. Some 228 Swedish seamen have perished, while 15 are missing. “U-boats definitely sank seven ships. One-third of the tonnage lest by U-boats was destined for Britain, but 53 per cent, of the total loss was plying between neutral ports.” Parliament passed a motion of confidence in the Government’s foreign policy. One in 472. Up to February 14, the number of ships escorted in British convoys since the beginning of the war was 8969, and the number lost in convoy was 19, being one in 472. After five days adrift in a crippled motorboat, 11 of the crew of a Norwegian steamer, believed to have been the Teenstad, landed in Eire. A U-boat followed the ship all night on February 14 and ordered the crew to take to the boats, after which she sank the ship. It is officially stated that Belgium has lost 12 ships, totalling 50,000 tons, since the outbreak of the war, says a message from Brussels.
