Allies Massing Planes In Near East, Egypt
(Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, February 22. THE allies are reported to be massing aeroplanes IN EGYPT, SYRIA AND PALESTINE. BRITISH ENGINEERS ARE REPORTED TO HAVE ARRIVED AT BAGDAD TO PROSPECT FOR OIL IN IRAK AND IRAN. Political circles in Berlin admit that they are alarmed by Turkey’s decision to apply the Emergency Defence Law. The speeches of the Turkish Foreign Minister (M. Saracoglu) at the Balkan Fonference somewhat reassured the Nazis, but rumours arc now current about Turkey’s warlike designs.
German military circles regard the Allied military and diplomatic activity in the Middle East as a concrete threat to the Russian oilfields, which are considered vital to German interests.
Allied attacks on the oilfields would be dangerous both to Russia and Germany while Russians are heavily committed in Finland. The Turkish decree restricts the export of currency and travel from Turkey.
