Moa Bones From Doubtless Bay
[Special to “Northern Advocate”l AUCKLAND, This Day. rpiE director of the Auckland Insti- : ' tute and Museum (Mr Gilbert Archey) yesterday reported that a large and important collection of moa bones were recently recovered by a museum expedition from the sandhills of Doubtless Bay, Northland. The remains were obtained of 26 different birds, the discoveries varying from a few odd bones to partially-complete skeletons.
The museum expedition travelled as the guests of Mr H. R. Jenkins in his yacht Golden Hind, and they were assisted in their search by Mr A. B. Deeming, of Opua. The bones that were found included those of the largest and smallest varieties of North Island moa. An egg in two parts was also discovered. The council expressed appreciation of the assistance afforded the museum authorities by Mr Jenkins and Mr JDeeming.
