Mangapai School Picnic
The annual school picnic took place in fine weather on the public recreation ground, Mangapai, on Friday ,last. Thomas 1. Adult Events Single ladies’ race: Miss R. McConnell 1, Miss E. Gulbransen 2; married ladies’ race: Mrs Allan Thomson 1, Mrs Cotton 2; young men’s race: L. Cotton 1, I. Nicholas 2, I. Walters 3; married men’s race: H. Vaile 1, J Finlayson 2; egg and spoon race: Miss R. McConnell and Mr Lloyd Cotton 1; cigarette race: Mr and Mrs Alex. Thomson 1. Mrs Gulbransen and Mr H. Vaile 2; nail-driving: Mrs Cotton 1, Mrs Gulbransen 2; consolation nail-driving: Mrs J. Finlayson. The teachers —Miss Mills and Mr Nicholas —worked hard to make the picnic a success and great credit is due to them for their efforts. Dance In the evening a dance was held, the hall being comfoitably filled with dancers. Mr I. Nicholas acted as M C Novelty dances won were: Lucky confetti, Miss A. Whittle and Mr L. Whisker; mystery waltz, Mr R. Turnbull’s partner (Mrs A. Cavaye) and Miss Mills’ partner. An extra waltz was played by Mrs Finlayson. During the evening Mrs Harrison presented the Herbert Smith Cups. Among those present were: Mesdames Harrison, black floral frock; McConnell, navy ensemble; W. A. Thomson, flame taffeta; A. R. Cavaye, black crinkle crepe; S. H. Grmandy, blue and white frock; L. B. Finlayson, orange cloque; Francis (Ongarue), black roumain; A. E. Carter, floral crepe. Misses D. Thomas, green stiffened lace, cyclamen accessories; Annie Whittle, blue embossed taffeta; Elma Webb, floral frock;; C. Webb, bronze taffeta; Alice Whittle, bottle green cloque; Maud Price, green satin; Glenys Holland, apricot crepe de chine; Eva Gulbransen, rose pink brocade; Beryl Mills, green and fawn shot taffeta; Ivy Grey, green velvet; Jean Lee, vedriol green sheer; Thelma Gough, floral frock; Nan Holland blue moire satin beaute; Erin Sloane, ivory georgette, with satin trimmings; Rene Balderston, blue floral; Joy Cotton, green floral frock; Joan McConnell, blue taffeta; Ruth McConnell, pink taffeta; Joyce Gulbransen, jubilee blue crepe faille; Hazel Thomson, floral georgette.
