Embargo Brings Pineapple Famine

[Per Press Association. Copyright .] AUCKLAND, This Day. Strong representations are being made to the Government by representatives of the fruit trade in Auckland, urging the removal of the embargo which has been imposed on the importation of fresh pineapples into New Zealand. The ban took effect at the beginning of this month, and it was stated today that unless the Government reversed its decision the fruit would disappear from the Dominion market when the present supplies in the shops were sold. "There is widespread indignation in the wholesale and retail fruit trade," said a member of the trade today. "The public generally does not realise what has happened, but will doubtless resent the Government’s action when it is found that the stocks in the shops are sold out." The chief source of supply has been Queensland, and small shipments have also been obtained from the Islands.
