Radio License Fees

LICENSE-HOLDERS will abandon any hopes they may have entertained that the reported financial success of the national and commercial radio services might move the Government to reduce the license fee. It is announced today that it will no longer be possible to pay the license by quarterly instalments owing to the extra work" which this entails. Payment must be made half-yearly or annually. This decision may or may not be a matter of consequence to many people, but the sting lies in the tail of the announcement, which is to the effect that the annual fee will remain twenty-five shillings. In view of the almost universality of radio in New- Zealand homes, it might reasonably have been expected that increased turnover would allow of reduced prices. However, the State is evidently of opinion that a monopolist should take advantage of the absence of competition, and the listener has no alternative but to pay the license fee demanded or dismantle his radio set, which is unthinkable.
