Rowing Championships

Oarsmen at the New Zealand Centennial rowing championships at Petone on Saturday had to contend with a strong head wind, blowing from the north, accompanied in the early afternoon by driving rain. Conditions close inshore were much better than further out, where the water was very choppy. Conditions improved slightly shortly after 4 o’clock, and it was then decided to row the champion fours at 5 p.m. and the champion eights at 6 p.m. Results were as follow:-* Maiden Fours.—Union (Wanganui) 1, Avon 2, Wairau 3. Youths’ Fours.—Union 1, Avon 2, Blenheim 3. Won by one and a half lengths, with half a length between second and third.
Maiden Pairs.—Union (Wanganui) 1, Wellington No. 1 2, Petone 3. Won by six lengths. New Zealand Championship Fours.— Clifton: Toplis (stroke), Old, Ollson, Sampson (bow), 1; Petone, 2; Auckland, 3. Won by two lengths, half a length separating second and third.
