Soldier Steals From His Comrades
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND, This Day. “It is a mean sort of thing to steal money belonging to soldiers going to the front,” said Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., in the police court today, when sentencing Frederick David Thompson, aged 21, a labourer, for the theft of money at the Papakura military camp. Thompson pleaded guilty to stealing sums totalling £l9 odd, the police stating that he entered the camp at Papakura on January 12, being sent, to hospital on January 28 with ear trouble. He began to steal from soldiers’ clothing after entering camp. He was discharged from the military forces on February 13. 12 Months’ Sentence. In March of 1939 he was before the court for attempted arson and was admitted to probation for two years. After that his uncle placed him on his farm but he left that work in January to join the army. Thompson was ordered to be detained for reformative purposes for a period of 12 months.
