In the presence of a crowd estimated at 9000, at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, yesterday, tho New Zealand Centennial brass band contest was begun in fine weather. Twenty-two bands and more than 500 bandsmen from all parts of the Dominion competed in the hymn test, which was won by the Auckland Artillery Band with 93 points. Although the points awarded for the hymn test do not count toward the championship, the test devoted to sacred music is considered an essential part of the New Zealand brass band contest. The placing's were: Auckland Artillery (“St. Leonards”) 93 points, 1; Port Nicholson Silver (“Rockdale”) 92. 2; Woolston (“Old Earth”), 90, 3.
