150 Whangarei Babies Compete In Carnival
Whangarei mothers embraced the St. John Ambulance Centennial baby carnival idea enthusiastically. In all, Whangarei and district entrants exceeded 150, and it is probable the number would have approached the 200 mark if it had not been for the handicap imposed on outside districts by the petrol restrictions, many mothers who had expressed an intention of entering their babies being unable to compete, and the majority of the entries came from the town area. The official movie cameraman, Mr Lee Hill,, spent two busy days In Whangarei photographing the local babies and, when he finished work on Saturday* evening, he expressed his admiration for the type of baby which had come forward, as well as gratification at Whangarei’s response to the campaign. Good Local Response The manager of the Plaza Theatre (Mr L. J. Michaels), in conjunction with whom the Whangarei campaign has been conducted, also expressed great satisfaction with the manner in which the carnival had been .received, as the entry compared more than favourably with those in other places in the Dominion. Movie pictures of the babies will commence showing at the Plaza Theatre on Tuesday, February 27, when it is expected the Mayor and Mayoress of Whangarei (Mr and Mrs Jones) and donors of prizes will be present.
