IT would indeed be a tragedy if the Finnish nation, after the heroic manner in which they have held up outnumbering hordes of Russian troops, backed by a tremendously superior weight of artillery fire and aerial bombs, should be defeated. It is difficult to ascertain the exact position, but there appears to be real danger of Russian victory unless foreign aid to Finland is forthcoming quickly and in great quantity. Marshal Mannerheim has addressed to the Finnish troops an order which is reminiscent of the “backs to the wall message Of Lord Haig at a critical stage of the Great War when all depended upon the British ability to “stick it out in the tace of djd stick jt out and the eventual victory of the Allies can be traced very largely to that fact, ihat the Finns may be able to hold on until reinforcements arrive is devoutly to be hoped.
