Subsidence Alarms Railwaymen
[Special to “Northern Advocate' ’] GREYMOUTH, This Day. Engine drivers and firemen are gravely concerned at the continued subsidence of a stretch of about five chains of the Midland railway line between Kaimata Tunnel and Aratika. It is stated from an authoritative source that it is feared the present track will eventually be thrown into the Arnold River. The Railway Department is adopting emergency measures in an endeavour to prevent the subsidence by cutting further into the towering hill on the opposite side of the line. The subsidence has probably been accentuated by the weather. During the last two months the rainfall in the vicinity has been about 25 inches, and the formation of the land is mostly sand, which subsides quickly and easily.
