Onerahi’s 10 Wicket Win Over Whangarei
Starting the day with 22 on the board without loss in their second innings, Whangarei batted stubbornly against accurate bowling. Jennings was the first to go, but Clark stuck on gamely until Mason got one of his swingers past him. Nisbet waited patiently for the loose ball and then punched it for four. He also fell to Mason, who finished with the excellent figures of six for 39 off 11 overs. To dismiss Stevenson, Whimp took a fine running catch to save what would have been a certain six. Twenty-six byes were included in Whangarei's total. Onerahi hit off the six runs for victory without loss, and went on to make 104 for eight in a practice bat. Fred Drake lost the ball with a terrific hit into the bullrushes, and made 21 retired. J. Mason made 12, J. Drake 25 retired, and W. Whimp 17 not out. Wilson took three for 35. Details: WHANGAREI. First Innings 189 SENIOR B Portland Lowers Albion's Colours In an exciting finish at Kensington , Park Albion went down to Portland by six runs, their first defeat this season. For the most part the batting was unenterprising, Portland getting their runs quicker. During the afternoon only three boundaries were hit, one—the only sixer—by Thorpe, who opened the Portland innings in lively vein. His bowling was treated with the greatest respect and after five overs he had one for 2, finishing with sjx for 25 off 17£ overs. Albion were soon in desperate straits, losing four for 15. F. Madden put more vigour into things, and while Ray lasted there was always a chance. He was eighth out at 58. For Albion Meaney, who took six for 20 in 7£ overs, was always on the spot. v Portland: 67 (Thorpe 20, O. Warin 10, L. Harris 16; Conway took four for 25, Meaney six for 20). Albion: 61 (F. Madden 20, Ray 17; Thorpe took six for 25). HIGH SCHOOL AND KAMO FIRSTS DRAW. Had Bateman not been spelled after taking three wickets for 8 in seven overs, High School A would have hardly escaped with a draw against
Kamo A. Both through the air and off the pitch Bateman was most deceptive. For School, Mr L. G. Miller, popular association coach and first eleven coach, recaptured some of his old form in making 37. High School A: 108 (Hoskin 29r Rasmussen 12, Miller 37; Bateman took six for 24). Kamo A: 81 for 8 (Manning 17, Matthews 15, Bateman 14 not out; Child took three for 35, Rasmussen three for 19).
CUNIS GETS 70 N.O. MOSTLY IN ONES. Owing to the long grass something like a record for scoring in singles was established at Kamo, where Cunis hit 44 in making 70 not out. His other scoring shots were a four (after nearly two hours at the crease), a six and eight twos. Starting his marathon he notched 17 solos in a row. His batting was most artistic and he employed every shot in a stay of 2£ hours. Four wickets fell for 22, but Cunis and Huston took the score to 107. Fourth bowler tried when Kamo B batted, Atkins consolidated the good position by taking three wickets in his first over, and finished with six for 9 in five overs. Combined Services B: 119 for seven wickets declared (Cunis 70 not out, Huston,3s;.Lester took four for 35). Kamo B: 44 (Lester 12; Atkins took six. for 9). CENTRAL GETS THERE AT LAST. Central, newly formed club this season, gained their first win, defeating Old Boys-Nomads B, whose captain, Philpott, played a slashing innings. Neither team had a full complement. For Central, Stevens, in making 36, hit eight fours.
Old Boys-Nomads: 108 (Philpott 55, Wilson 27, Blanshard 11; Roy croft took five for 32)., Central: 141. (Ashcroft 25, Troup 31, Baker 19, Stevens 36). WALLBANK ALL ROUNDER. With hay stooks in the outfield and grass stubs inches long, ground shots petered out at Hikurangi, accounting for low' scoring. Wallbank's all-round play was a big factor in the home side's success.
High School B: 58 (Loach 22, Pollock 14; Wallbank took four for 18, Meyer four for 12). Hikurangi: 95 (Wallbank 24, Parkes 28, Venn 23; Nisbet took three for 17).
