Victory Will Not Be Easy, Stanley Says
(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 16. After inspecting troops in the British forward area, the War Secretary ■(Mr Oliver Stanley) in an interview said: “We must fight and suffer. “The severest struggle undoubtedly faces the British troops here. "It is absolutely absurd to imagine that the Germans will go down without trying out their war machine to its fullest extent. I am not a pessimist, but victory will not be easily purchased.” He described the New Zealanders and Australians in the Middle East as “magnificent material” that might have to fight alongside troops from Britain “in whatever theatre of war may be necessary.” A night communique says: “There was activity among our patrols. “One suffered some losses when crossing a German minefield.”
