Drain on State Reserve Of Galvanised Iron
to “Northern Advocate’’] AUCKLAND, This Day. So acute has the scarcity of galvanised roofing iron become l'n Auckland that the Government is distributing 100 tons among merchants from its reserves at Trentham, which are reported to comprise 1500 and 2000 tons. Authority has been given to increase the price of this iron by £4 17/6 a ton to cover cost of transport. Its release to the trade is designed to meet a crisis, and while it has been eagerly taken up, it is unfortunate that the gauge is 24, for the usual gauge for house roofing is 26. Auckland has been without shipments for some time, so that the emergency pool created by the Government has had little replenishment. Reasons for Shortage. The procedure is that from every shipment the Government deducts 25 per cent, of the quantity, which is held against emergencies. The reason given for the tailing off of Australian shipments is that large supplies have been sent to Egypt and Palestine, while because of the shortage of suitable vessels for grain shipments to Europe, big galvanised granaries are being built throughout Aus-, tralia in which to store wheat. «
