Whangarei Swimmers Show Improvement
Improvement resulting from regular training was again apparent last evening when the Whangarei Swimming Club held another club night. Competition was keen and a good attendance of spectators was treated to an excellent display. Results: Junior girls’ 50 yards.—R. Gribble 1, N. Provan 2, G. Simons 3. Time. 41 3-ss. Only a touch separated each of the placed competitors. Junior boys’ 100 yards.—First heat: T. Tupp 1, F. Leisman 2. G. Johnstone 3 Time, 1.25 4-5. Second heat: R. Rice 1, K. Fox 2, L. Lovatt 3. Time, 1.14 3-5. Final: Rice 1, Tupp 2, Lovatt 3. Time, I.IC. The final Was well contested to a close finish. " Intermediate girls' 66 2-3 yards-—E. Fattison 1, D. Kennett 2. Time 535. Time, 6. 56 3-5. Junior relay, 133 1-3 yards.—R. Rice, T. Tupp, L. Johnston, B. Haden 1, L. Lovatt, G. Johnstone, K. Fox, W. Wilson 2. 50 Yards breaststroke. —N. Provan 1. Time, 455. m Carnival Prospects. Competition in races on club nights has done much to improve the standard of Whangarei swimming and prospects are good for an excellent carnival next Tuesday evening. In winning the junior girls’ race R. Gribble showed much improved form end swam a good race. Among the junior boys Tupp has improved wonderfully ps a result of attention to style and training and has gained the top of his form. Rice is swimming well and is in first class fettle for the carnival. L. Pattison swam a good race in the intermediate girls’ 66 2-3 yards but she is not yet in her best form. Off the limit in the intermediate 220 yards L. Scott swam a well-timed race and m.anged to stave off opposition in the final .sprint. Spectators were given a thrill by Alach in the 440 yards event. Swimming from the scratch mark lie recorded good time and will be a leading contender in the Northland 220 yards championship next week. R. Cavanagh won the other 440 yards race, competing 10 minutes after he had swam in the 220 yards event, and showed improvement and fitness.
