Outstanding feature of the day’s news was the story of a terrific battle in which the Russians were engaged. The assault was terrific and furiously repelled. The enemy tried to take the Russian positions between Styre and Munkacs. They relied . on the momentum of their enormous numbers. They gained the Russian trendies, but after an unexampled bayonet battle were driven out. A representative of Australain sporting organisations dedarotl that it ivas the duty of all sportsmen to respond to the Empires call by enlisting. An emergency Bill was passed by the New South Wales Parliament requisitioning all the stock supplies of the State for Imperial use. Owners of stock would be compensated at a price to be determined. An Austrian communique contained a pessimistic note, suggesting that the nerve of Germany s ally had been badly shaken.
