Only 2 Barrels Of U.S. Aviation Petrol Sent To Russia

(Received 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 31

The Washington despatch of January 19 stating that the U.S. had imported 1,300,000 barrels of petrol to Russia since the start of the war, has been refuted by the Stockholm correspondent of the “New York Times.” He says he has learned from an unimpeachable source that only two barrels of aviation petrol (intended for laboratory use) were sent to Russia since the beginning of the RussoFinnish war, and only 883,000 barrels of petrol, none of which were of aviation quality, to Russia since the start of the European war. The correspondent says American exporters are religiously observing the moral embargo imposed by the Secretary of State (Mr Cordell Hull). The despatch’from Washington had strained the relations between Sweden and America and had provoked bitter editorial attacks against the United States.
