Details of the sinking of the Tokomaru showed that the vessel was practically stationary, waiting fo r a pilot, when she was torpedoed. ~ German newspapers were jubilant over the activity of submarines, which conveyed a threat of cutting off Britain’s food supplies. The Icaria, torpedoed simultaneously with the Tokomaru, was towed by tugs into Havre Harbour, where the leak in the hull was stopped. An anticipated attack on Ypres by the Germans was severely repelled, the enemy leaving 1600 dead behind. The Allies had secured a footing on the Great Dune, of which they held the western portion. The Germans held the remainder. The transfer of 1,000,000 troops to Austria before the spring had been promised the Austro-Hun-garian Premier by the Kaiser. A march in strong force towards Ahawz, in Persia, where the British oilfields were situated, was being carried out by the Turks. In the Carpathians the Russian left wing was making substantial advances, and was taking prisoners every day
