Suggests Immediate Start With Tasman Service
(Received 11 a.m.) MELBOURNE, .This Day,
The Air Minister (Mr J. V. Fairburn) has suggested to the New Zealand Government that the transtasman air service should begin immediately on a temporarily wartime basis once a week.
Mr Fairburn said it was hoped to obtain a second flyingboat. If all went well the service could be extended to twice weekly. The Commonwealth's proposal was that the service be operated by Union Airways, with Quantas Empire' Airways as the Australian agents. The service should be run purely by the local companies as the agents of Britain, Australia and New Zealand. Because of insufficient .aircraft for a service oa a hard and fast basis, the Commonwealth saw no object in entering a long-term agreement- with the proposed new company, but if the other Government wanted to establish the new company, the Commonwealth would readily agree.
