Escaped Prisoner Shot Before Recaptured
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] TAUMARUNUI, This Day.
Evidence that an escaped prisoner was shot in the arm before he was recaptured was given in the Taumarunui Police Court this morning. Charles Richard Ross, who escaped from custody at the Waikune prison camp on January 20, was charged with being an incorrigible rogue and with escaping from legal custody. He pleaded guilty.
There were too many escapes from Waikune, and the prisoners did not realise they were being well treated, added Sergeant Abel.
Ross gaid he escaped under mental stress and while hiding in the bush he was ill.
When a warder came upon him he got a surprise and jumped back and received a bullet in the right arm. Sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment was imposed.
