Situation In Far East Deteriorating
(Received 10 a.m.) SHANGHAI. January 24. THE SITUATION IN THE * FAR EAST IS RAPIDLY DETERIORATING. THE AN t GER OF THE JAPANESE OVER THE ASAMA MARU INCIDENT, COUPLED WjtfH THE LAPSING OF THE UNITED STATES COMMERCIAL TREATY WITH JAPAN ON FRIDAY, IS PLAYING INTO THE HANDS OF THE EXTREMISTS.
There is an unpleasant tendency to build up the belief that the United States is acting in concert with Britain.
Keep Up Pressure ' The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says the State Department’s statement to Mr Horinouchi means that the United States intends to keep up its pressure on Japan. The Administration will quietly discourage action by Congress toward an embargo, at present, in view of the conversations which the United States Ambassador to Japan (Mr J. C. Crew) is conducting, but after Friday, the President will be able swiftly to levy duties and restrictions on imports in Japanese ships if discrimination- continues, " \ ■’ '' A ' '
