Sturt Outed By Auckland Tennis Tyro
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
The annual provincial championship tournament of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association is making rapid progress.
The surprise of yesterday was the defeat. of N. G. Sturt in the second round of the men’s singles championship by J. H. Moller, an intermediate member of the Eden and Epsom Club. Three matches in this event went to five sets, that between A. S. Burns and C. O. Litherland lasting for two hours and a half. In another five-set contest B. Broun scored a win over J. D. Mitchell. Veterans Do Well.
A great deal of interest was taken in the men’s doubles match between the veteran combination of E. L. Bartleet and H. *D. Brinsden, who opposed L. G. Knott and J. T. Mayson. Bartleet demonstrated that his service has still to be reckoned with, and he volleyed and lobbed well. A feature of matches in other sections was the play of two competitors in the junior boys’ singles. They met in the second round on No. 1 court, and attracted the attention of a large section of the spectators. One, J. Barry, of Whangarei, is only 11 years of age, and his opponent, G. L. Wright, ,of the Royal Oak Club, is only three or four years older. Whangarei’s McGrath.
Barry played all his shots on either side double-handed, and his ground shots and volleying earned him frequent applause. Both boys displayed the confidence and coolness of veterans, and many of the onlookers were sorry when they were from the front court to make room for senior competitors. Results included: —
