Recruiting Depot To Be Opened At Waitangi
A recruiting office for enlistments for the Maori Battalion will be open at Waiftangi during the Centennial celebrations. ' in response to representations by Maori elders, who considered the celebrations would provide an excellent opportunity for recruiting among the natives, permission has been granted. . _ The presence of the Maori Battalion, which will travel to Waitangi from the camp which opens at Palmerston North tomorrow, is expected to give a further fillip to recruiting in the North.
The battalion is expected to arrive at Waitangi on February 4 and to return after the celebrations on February 6. Mr T. T. Puriri, who has been in charge of Maori enlistments for the North, using the Whangarei Airrny Office as headquarters, will be in charge of the Waitangi recruiting depot.
