Kaikohe Swimmers,
On Thursday a team of Kaikohe swimmers from the local club will travel to Whangarei to compete m the second carnival to be staged this season by the Whangarei Amateur Swimming Club. The members of the team are: Misses A. and N. Griffin and T. Richards, and Messrs B. Wadsworth and D. Goodhue. $ $ t*: 9 Woman Fractures Waist. Admitted to the Whangarei Hospital. suffering from a severe fracture of the right wrist, Mrs Elizabeth Collier, of Whangarei, is reported to be progressing satisfactorily. Mrs Collier fell from a stool while working as a laundress at the boys’ hostel at the Whangarei High School.
Modernising- H.M.A.S. Sydney. Modern long-range and anti-aircraft guns and .ammunition have been ordered by the Federal Government to replace the existing high-angle armament of H.M.A.S. Sydney. Improved equipment for the handling and launching of aircraft will also be installed in the ship, which will be the third Australian cruiser to be rearmed with the latest available equipment. The cost of the rearmament of H.M.A.S. Canberra and Australia is estimated at £429,236. A new system of fire control for the guns of the destroyers Yarra and Swan will be installed shortly. Equipment also has been ordered for converting a number of low-angle guns to high-angle armament for use by auxiliaries on war service. During the next six months defensive armament will be provided for an additional number of merchant ships.
Fractured Ankle. A fractured ankle was suffered by Mrs Elsie Maud Davies, aged 40, ol Wellsford, when she slipped and fell at her home yesterday afternoon. She wps admitted to the Auckland Hospital. Her condition is not serious.
New Engine Delayed. The J engine, which is on a trial run on Northland railway lines, was unable to keep to its schedule today owing to difficulty being experienced in passing other traffic on the one track line from Auckland. Instead of arriving at Whangarei at 11.2 a.m. it was two hours later when the engine steamed in. A number of imople who had assembled, to witness the arrival this morning were disappointed. «? * * » Electricity in Dairy Factories. Northland dairy companies, which are users of electricity, are represented at a conference being held .at Whangarei today. It has been convened by the North Auckland Dairy Conference, the chairman of which (Mr. E. G. Appleton) is also a member of the North Auckland Power Board. Discussion centred round, the number of units necessary to manufacture a ton of butter, and was aided by tabulated figures prepared by the conference officers as a basis.
Parliamentarians for Waitangi. According to advice received by Mi-. J. G. Barclay, M.P., approximately half the members of both the Upper House and the House of Representatives will be present at Waitangi celebrations. They will travel by special train leaving Auckland on Monday night and returning after the function on Tuesday. The Prime Minister hopes to attend.
