War Widow With Soldier Sons, Homeless
[Special to “Northern Advocate’’] AUCKLAND, This Day. An Auckland war widow, C. A. Wiley, of 26 Broadway, Newmarket, is unable to secure a house. She has been faced with a notice to quit her present residence, owing to pending demolition, under threat of legal proceedings. Two Sons Serving Mrs Wiley said yesterday that two of her five sons were already serving their country. One was in the Achilles and the other in camp. “While my sons are going off to the war their mother cannot' find a house in which to live,” Mrs Wiley said. “I have had my name down for a State house for two years, and have been to see the Housing Department in Auckland, and have written again and again. “Be Borne in Mind” “I have letters from everyone, from the Minister (Mr Armstrong) downward, saying that my case would be borne in mind with others in allocating houses. “Not long ago they wrote to say there were 7000 other cases in -Auckland to be considered, and each would be treated on its merits. “Could there be any more serious case than mine?” The house Mrs Wiley occupied is an old one and is to be demolished to enable a block of flats to be built. She has been advised by the Fair Rents Office in Auckland that the landlord is entitled to possession for this purpose.
