YACHTING -By " B owsprit"

Although the weather on Saturday was rather doubtful, most of the fleet went away for the weekend.

The majority of the yachts made straight for Taurikura. the attraction being a dance in the evening. Among the boats that went to Taurikura was the 11-footer Knok Knok.

It was a long trip for such a small boat, but, as the weather was in- thetr favour, they came to no harm. The dance in the evening was enjoyed by all, in spite of the fact that there was rain from 8 o’clock until Sunday morning.

A notable incident at the dance was the entertainment given by the yachtsmen’s choir as they marched and sang to the tune of “The Beer Barrel Polka.”

On Sunday morning a sudden improvement in the weather brought good cheer, and a game of rounders

was soon under way on the beach. At midday the boats set off for home under perfect weather conditions.

They had an easy sail to Onerahi, but then they encountered a considerable amount of heavy rain. Yachtsmen got in plenty of practice for the yachtsmen’s relay race, which is taking place at the swimming carnival on Thursday flight. Approximately eight boats will be represented. The launches were once again in prominence, among those seen being the Kowhai, Florence, Bernice, Rongatai, Mr Alf Walker’s and Mr Drummond’s.

The Cruising Club’s annual regatta is taking place at Onerahi on Monday and this promises to be the best in recent years.

There are yacht, launch and outboard races, as well as novelty events.
