Fined For Cruelty To Horse

“This is a shocking case of longstanding cruelty to an unfortunate animal. “Seldom have I heard of a case showing such brutality."

Mr R. Ferner, S.M., said this at the Maungaturoto Court. He convicted John Marinovich for ill-treating a horse at Mangawai. "If I did my duty,’’ continued Mr Ferner. “I would send you to gaol, so you could suffer as you made that poor horse suffer, but you are an old man and I do not like doing it. “You are in poor circumstances, bul you will be fined £5, plus costs amounting to £3 10/6. “You will have 14 days to pay and if you don’t you will go to gaol."

Mr Cairns (for Marinovich) submitted he was an, old-age pensioner arid might have difficulty in meeting the fine and costs. Mr Ferner said Ire would review Mrrinovich’s circumstances before issuing a warrant.

The case was brought by the S.P.C.A
