Strong Pairs In Provincial Combined Doubles

The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship tournament was continued yesterday. Chief interest centred in the quarter-final matches of the combined doubles, and four strong pairs go forward to the semi-finals.

Among them are ,J. W. Gunn and Miss M. Beverley, who won the title two seasons ago, and W. T. Pountney and Miss N. Beverley, who wore successful last year. All four matches in this event were won m straight sets, but there were many splendid rallies and closelycontested games. This was particularly the case in the match which was decided between M. T. Wilson and Miss P. Cooke, and S. J. Robinson and Miss R. Hodges. The latter, who is New Zealand singles and doubles junior champion, earned a lot of applause for clever placemen ts. Results included:—

Combined doubles.—Quarter-finals: W. T. Pountney and Miss N. Beverley beat J. H. Moller and Miss J. E. Ramsay, 6—2. 6—l; M. T. Wilson and Miss P. Cooke beat S. J. Robinson and Miss R. Hodges, 6—4, 6—3; L. G. Knott and Miss R. Taylor beat A. C. Johns and Miss M. Macfarlane, (i—2, 6—3; J. W. Gunn and Miss M. Beverley beat L H. Watson and Mrs C. Partridge. 6—3, o—3.

Men's singles.—First round: N. G. Sturt beat S. M. Clarke, G—2, 6—o, G—2; A. S. Burns beat A. Colthart, G—o. G—3, G—o; C. O. Litherland beat W. E. Butler, G—l, 7—5, 7—5; C. H. Bowen beat J. A. Brown. G—2, 6—4, 6 —2; N. M. Smith beat A. H. S. Lamb, 6—3, 6-4. 6—3; K. Clark beat E. 11. Halstead. 3—6, 6—4, 6—3, 6—o; D. Clow beat A. S. Brown, 6—4, G—4, 6 G. M. Radonich beat T. 11. Wilson, 6—4, 6—4, G—4. Second round: N. F. Bedford beat C. S. Mathers, 6—l, 7 6—3.
