"This man seems to be a persistent offender, and any further offences of this nature will be visited with severe penalties." This comment was made by the magistrate (.Mr Ferner) in the Whangarei Court this morning, when inflicting a fine of £2, with, costs 10/-, on Thomas Seddon Evans Sloane, on one charge, and ordering him to pay 13/- costs on a second charge.
Sloane was charged with having tailed to pay instalments of registration levies for the months November 1, 1936, to February, 1939, amounting to £3/15/-. inclusive of penalty fees, and with having defaulted in payments of instalments of the registration fees due on May 1, 1939, and August 3, 1939, respectively, amounting to 14/-, inclusive of penalty fees.
Appearing for Sloane, Mr E. A. Harrison pleaded guilty to both charges. Prosecuting on behalf of the Social Security Department, Senior-Sergeant A. Henderson said that Sloane had been interviewed by a constable, who had inspected his levy-book. Sloane told the constable that his failure to pay was due to carelessness on his part. Asked by the magistrate what were Sloane’s circumstances,. Mr Harrison said lie was a dentist practising in Whangarei. and the offences had been due i<> carelessness. “I don’t think there will be any trouble in future as he finds it is too expensive not to pay bis levies when they are due." said Mr Harrison.
