89 Men Trapped in U.S. Coalmine
NEW YORK, January 10.
A message from Bartley, Virginia, says that, with seven men known to be dead, rescuers are working frantically to release 89 miners who have been trapped 600 feet underground by an explosion in the Pocahontas coalmine.
The rescuers, hindered by “deadair,” pushed slowly toward the sections of the mine where the men are entombed. Two bodies were found within half a mile of the 620-foot shaft.
Hopes of finding others alive have dwindled with the passing hours. Two thousand relatives are Waiting at the surface.
