In Cologne When Germany Marched
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
When German troops marched into Foland Mr. C. W. M. Preen, of Timaru, was in Cologne. Very wisely he decided to cross the frontier into Belgium, where „he found extensive troop movements in progress. Another highlight of his nine months’ trip abroad was the rescue by the ship on which lie wa§ travelling of the crew of a torpedoed Canadian vessel.
Food Plentiful in Germany.
During a three weeks’ trip in Germany, Mr. Preen saw no unemployed. Those who were not conscripted for the army were placed in labour corps. Food was plentiful enough, although there was not the same variety as was available in New Zealand. Everywhere he went he was treated -with the utmost, courtesy and no obstacle was placed in the way of his taking films of places of interest. Perhaps too much power was placed in the hands of the German police, he said.
He noticed a policeman thrash a civilian with a truncheon in the streets one day.
