Kauri Gum From Crutch And Barrel

Kauri gum such as is rarely met with these days but which was common 50 years ago forms part of a collection on view in a Cameron Street shop.

In little frequented bushes, long strips of the dark coloured gum used to suspend from kauri barrels and branches, and it is a piece of this nature, just as it was lopped off a tree in the Opuawhanga bush nearly 40 years ago, which forms such a striking contrast to--polished gums also cn display.

Another piece is a lump taken from the crutch of a tree.

In a closely-forking kauri as much as 2001'ds were lifted from the one place, these being easy pickings indeed for the digger.
