Rapid Defence Strengthening At Philippine Islands

NEW YORK, January 7. The strengthening of the defences of the Philippine Islands is being rapidly completed, says the Manila correspondent of the United Press. The preparations are understood to include increases in the Army, Navy and Air Force, the establishment of sea and air patrols, and long-range bombers to maintain a patrol of the approaches to the archipelago. The Navy fs patrolling 1200 miles of sea lanes.

The Philippine Army consists of 120,000 reserves, a small standing army, about 45 pursuit and training aeroplanes. It is believed that President Quezon fs ready to approve an annual defence expenditure of 8.000,000 dollars. This would provide 360,000 trained reserves and a standing army of 20,000 men by 1946.
