Big Surprises For H.Q.

Nice things do happen, Northlanders, specially when one’s Rangatira of the Northland Tribe,

Both Princess and I want to thank the many Northlanders who sent us cards and greetings for Christmas. But especially do we want to thank the mysterious sombodies who sent this note to H.Q. on Saturday. “Dear Kupe,” it, read, “please find £2 5/ enclosed. This is a Xmas present from the children of the following schools who are going to the Exhibition with you. We all appreciate the help you have given us and that you have worked so hard organising to make the trip possible for us. We did not know what to buy you so are sending the money for you and the Princess to choose your own present. “Wishing you a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year from the travellers from: —Takahiwai, Pataua, Pakaraka, Maungakaramea, Matapouri, Waiotira; Waikiekie, Ngunguru, Owhiwa, Punaruku. Mangonui, Tapuhi, Houto, Kaikohe.” ,

“Looks as though there’s been a fairy at work,” said, the Princess.

“A leprechaun, perhaps,” I suggested, and we all smiled wisely. The gift came as such a surprise that still the Princess and I haven’t decided what we’ll buy. : o. ' “Might be a good idea to have some extra pennies with you when you’re in Wellington,” someone suggested; and that, I think, is where part of this special present will be spent. Our very best thanks to- these thoughtful Northlanders who gave us this grand surprise. The S.P. said a series of “Gobbly-glug-glugs” this morning which interpreted, mean “Please thank Northlanders who sent me kind wishes and particularly to Norma Carter, whose ball I love, to Marg, Maddren for the reindeer, and to Zelma Aden for the feeder.”

An extra “glug or two” said; “And while you’re on the job say thanks to Frances and Nancy Weaver for me for a little something they sent some time ago’.’ "
