English Couples Eager To Adopt Piccaninny

Scores of English couples want to adopt a six-months-old chocolate-hued, West Indian piccaninny. The piccaninny is one of six babies among the 260 survivors of the Dutch steamer Simon Bolivar. The Simon Bolivar was sunk by a mine near the English coast on November 18. With other babies, the piccaninny was taken to a London hospital. His parents are presumed to have been killed or drowned when the Simon Bolivar sank. When no one came to- claim him. the hospital staff named him Simon. At first he was believed to be twin to a baby girl found with him. But the girl had been covered with oil in the explosion on the ship. After the oil had been washed off she was found to be white. She was later claimed by her Dutch mother, also a survivor.
