Duchess Won’t Go To Air-Raid Shelters
The Duchess of Windsor has refused to take refuge in a bomb-proof shelter during air-raid warnings in Paris, and' does not intend to do so. “I suffer from claustrophobia” (fear of confined spaces) the Duchess said. “If things ever get tod bad I may go into the Bois de Bolonge.” These woods are near the Duke and Duchess’ former home in. the Boulevard Suchet. “Anyway, if you are at war you must accept your chances,” said the Duchess. “Being killed by a bomb is something like a careful driver being killed in a motor accident. “It’s a sort of act of God. “It’s unpredictable, and there isn’t much you can do about it.” An International News Service reporter believes there was a strong difference of opinion between the Duke and Duchess on the question of her remaining in Paris. The Duke wanted her out of any potential air-raid regions, but she wished to be where she could see him during his visits to Paris. The Duchess won. The Duke is a major-general with the Allied forces.
